My House Is Too Cold!

Winter is coming! No, I’m not talking about the Game of Thrones. I’m referring to how it feels to live inside your home when the weather gets to freezing and your house feels like an igloo.

Insulation does not retain its insulating properties forever. If yours is 10 years or older, these degradations continue with time, and it's likely that your attic insulation is not sufficient, or it may need to be replaced.

What are some of the signs that present themselves when it’s time to replace your old insulation or "blow over" your existing insulation to bring it up to the proper R-value (or install new insulation if you’ve never had it before):

1.        Energy bills are going through the roof! HVAC systems are working overtime to heat or cool your house, depending upon the season.

2.        Temperatures vary from room to room due to compromised insulation placement or degradation.

3.        Cold air drafts. May be coming from your doors, windows, even walls. They too need to be insulated or re-insulated.

4.        Invasion of unwanted critters suggest gaps in the insulation from tunnels they dig to bring in more air to breathe, or some of the existing insulation has been degraded by the pest’s urine and / or feces.

5.        Icicles hanging from your roof. Screams poor insulation. It indicates that heat is leaking from the house, melting the snow in the winter, which drips to colder areas and refreezes as icicles.

6.        You have to ‘layer’ your clothing to keep warm indoors.

7.        Your existing insulation had flattened, thinned, reducing the insulating properties.

8.        Your home feels damp or smells musty. Suggests the insulation is water damaged. If not corrected, deadly mold may grow.

9.        Outside noises like louder traffic noises indicate insulation wear.

10.  Walls are cold to the touch. Indicates insulation is insufficient or damaged.

11.  Increased allergies or respiratory problems are caused by pollutants, allergens or dust that gets past your old / degraded insulation.

12.  HVAC runs continually.

What are you going to do about this?

If you have had or still have varmints living in your attic or crawlspace, call your local pest control and have them removed.

Second, hire the best insulation company in Northern Alabama called Insulation Plus – located in Huntsville.
